Gunks Rock Climbing

rock climbing in the gunks

What to Expect

We usually meet at 8:30 am at the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center. We use the East Trapps Connector Trailhead parking area, which is located just up the paved black asphalt driveway from the Visitor Center.  CLICK HERE for a GPS point for our exact meeting location.

We will meet and greet in the parking lot, finish any paperwork, and get you geared up for the day. From the parking area, the cliff is a short, 15-25 minute uphill hike. During full days, we can climb for 8 hours until about 4 p.m. (½ days are 4 hours).

What to Wear

  • In general, we recommend comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Functionality and flexibility are paramount to your comfort throughout the day.
  • Check the forecast ahead of time to be prepared for any weather. Adjustable layering is always a good idea.
  • Wear shorts or long pants, depending on the time of year.
  • Bring a windbreaker and/or rain jacket if turbulent weather is in the forecast
  • A hat for sun protection is good and a beanie for colder days.
  • Heavy hiking boots are unnecessary. Sneakers or trail shoes are best for scrambling over rocky terrain. Avoid open-toed footwear.

What to Bring

*All technical climbing equipment and day passes for the Mohonk Preserve are included with your reservation.*

  • Bring a lunch and snacks to stay fueled.
  • At least 2 liters of water or sports drinks per person daily to stay hydrated.
  • Sunscreen and/or insect repellent.
  • A small to medium-sized backpack to carry everything.

Our Cancellation Policy

Mountain Skills will determine cancellations due to inclement weather 24 hours before a scheduled trip. If we must cancel, we will work to reschedule you as soon as possible. Other cancellations are accepted up to 8 days in advance for a full credit or refund. Cancellations 7 to 4 days before your trip will be charged a $100 fee and rescheduled according to availability.

No-shows and cancellations 3 days or less before the trip are charged the full 100% fee.

Groups of 5 or more require a 50% deposit, which will NOT be refunded if the trip is canceled 8 days or less before the scheduled departure. The deposit and final payment are contingent on the group’s initial headcount, regardless of whether members of your party ultimately decide not to participate.

Last-minute cancellations impede our ability to schedule others in your place. This policy provides our guides with a measure of job security.  We appreciate your understanding.
